Why Reading Books Still Matters in the Age of AI

We are living through the most significant technological shift since the printing press, and the irony is thick: the technology that can generate text at inhuman speed is making the slow, human act of reading more important than ever.

Large language models can summarise, paraphrase, and produce passable prose on virtually any topic. They can answer questions, draft emails, and write code. What they cannot do is read a book. Not really. Not in the way that matters. Because reading is not information retrieval. Reading is the deliberate, sustained act of inhabiting another consciousness, and that act builds cognitive capacities that no algorithm replicates.

The neuroscience of deep reading

What AI actually can't do

The conversation about AI often centres on what it can do, which is genuinely impressive. But the more interesting question is what it structurally cannot do, not because of current limitations, but because of what it fundamentally is.

AI doesn't experience narrative tension. It doesn't feel the slow dread of a Shirley Jackson story or the accumulating grief of Joan Didion's prose. It doesn't sit with ambiguity, doesn't change its mind halfway through a chapter, doesn't put a book down to stare at the ceiling because a sentence rearranged something inside it. These are not bugs in the human reading experience. They are the entire point.

When you read a novel, you are practising sustained attention -- the ability to stay with a single thread of thought for hours. In a world of fragmented digital stimuli, this is becoming a rare and valuable skill. Cal Newport calls it "deep work." Psychologists call it "cognitive endurance." Whatever you call it, reading is one of the few remaining activities that trains it.

You are also practising creative synthesis. When you read, your brain is constantly generating mental images, filling in gaps, making predictions, and connecting the text to your own experience. You are not passively receiving information. You are actively constructing meaning. This is the cognitive muscle that drives innovation, strategic thinking, and original insight -- exactly the skills that will matter most in an economy where routine cognitive work is increasingly automated.

The empathy argument

Empathy is not a soft skill. It's a competitive advantage in every domain that involves working with humans, which is to say, every domain. And reading is an empathy simulator of extraordinary fidelity.

When you read Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Americanah, you don't just learn about the Nigerian immigrant experience in America. You live inside it for 500 pages. You feel Ifemelu's disorientation, her code-switching, her quiet fury at being flattened into a racial category that has nothing to do with her actual identity. This kind of immersive perspective-taking goes far beyond what any summary, documentary, or social media post can achieve.

The University of Chicago researchers found that this effect is specific to literary fiction -- stories that ask you to navigate complex, ambiguous characters whose motivations aren't spelled out. Genre fiction, which tends to rely on more predictable character types, didn't produce the same effect. This doesn't mean genre fiction is worse. It means different kinds of reading build different cognitive skills, and a varied reading diet is worth cultivating.

Reading as resistance

There is also a political dimension here. In a world where AI can generate persuasive text on demand, the ability to read critically -- to evaluate arguments, detect manipulation, distinguish evidence from assertion -- is a form of civic self-defence. Media literacy has always mattered, but when the volume of synthetic content is exploding, deep reading skills become essential infrastructure for a functioning democracy.

Readers who have spent years engaging with complex texts develop a finely tuned sense for rhetorical sleight of hand. They notice when an argument substitutes emotion for evidence. They recognise the structure of a strawman. They can hold two contradictory ideas in mind simultaneously without rushing to resolve the tension. These are skills that atrophy without practice, and reading is the practice.

How to protect your reading brain

If you're reading this, you probably already read books. But the quality of your reading attention may have degraded without you noticing. Many readers report that they can no longer sustain attention the way they once could -- that their minds wander after a few pages, that they reach for their phone mid-chapter.

The fix is not complicated, but it does require intention:

  • Read without your phone in the room. Not on silent. Not face down. In another room entirely. The mere presence of a smartphone reduces available cognitive capacity, even when it's off.
  • Read for time, not pages. Set a timer for 30 minutes and read until it goes off. This removes the anxiety of progress and lets you settle into the text.
  • Track what you read. Not for productivity points, but for self-knowledge. When you can see your reading patterns over months and years, you develop a relationship with your reading life that sustains itself. Logging a finished book creates a small moment of satisfaction that reinforces the habit.
  • Diversify your reading. Alternate between fiction and non-fiction, between challenging and comfortable, between long and short. Variety keeps your reading brain engaged and prevents the staleness that leads to slumps.
  • Reread books that changed you. Rereading is underrated. You are a different person than you were when you first read that book, and the book will be different too.

The irreplaceable act

AI will keep getting better at producing and processing text. That's fine. That's progress. But the human act of reading -- of giving your sustained, embodied attention to another mind's attempt to make sense of the world -- is not something to be optimised away. It is, in the deepest sense, how we become more fully human.
