Books vs Podcasts vs AI Summaries: What Actually Makes You Smarter?

There's more information available to you right now than at any point in human history. You can read a 400-page book on behavioural economics. You can listen to the author discuss it on a two-hour podcast. Or you can ask an AI to summarise the key points in thirty seconds. All three will give you something. But they won't give you the same thing.

The question isn't which format is best. It's which format is best for what you're trying to do.

The case for books

Books win on depth, and it's not close. A book gives an author 60,000 to 100,000 words to build an argument, layer evidence, explore nuance, and address counterarguments. That space matters. Complex ideas need room to breathe, and books provide it.

There's also strong cognitive science behind the superiority of reading for retention and understanding. A 2019 study published in the International Journal of Educational Research found that reading text produces better comprehension than listening to the same content, particularly for complex material. The theory is that reading is self-paced: you can slow down for difficult passages, re-read sentences, and pause to think. Listening is time-locked to the speaker's pace.

Reading also engages what psychologists call "deep processing." When you read, your brain constructs mental models, makes inferences, and connects new information to existing knowledge. This active construction is where real learning happens. It's effortful, which is precisely why it works.

The downside of books is time. A nonfiction book takes anywhere from six to fifteen hours to read. In a world of competing demands, that's a significant investment.

The case for podcasts

Podcasts excel at something books can't do: they fill dead time. You can listen while commuting, exercising, cooking, or walking. This makes podcasts the most time-efficient format for many people, not because they're faster, but because they fit into moments that books can't reach.

Podcasts are also excellent for exposure. A good interview podcast can introduce you to ideas, authors, and fields you'd never encounter otherwise. They function as a discovery layer, broadening your awareness so you can decide where to go deeper.

The conversational format has real advantages too. Hearing an expert respond to challenges, clarify misunderstandings, and rephrase ideas in real time can illuminate concepts that feel opaque on the page. The human voice carries tone, emphasis, and personality that text can't fully replicate.

Where podcasts fall short is depth and retention. Studies on audio learning consistently show lower retention compared to reading, particularly for information-dense content. The linear, time-locked nature of audio means you can't easily go back to re-hear a complex point, and the passive nature of listening (especially while doing something else) reduces encoding strength.

The case for AI summaries

AI summaries are genuinely useful as a triage tool. When you're deciding whether a book is worth reading, a five-minute summary can save you hours. When you need to quickly recall the key arguments of something you read years ago, an AI-generated recap can be remarkably helpful.

They're also good for getting the gist of topics outside your core interests. Not every subject warrants a full book investment, and a well-structured summary can give you enough context to hold a conversation or make a decision.

But here's the critical limitation: AI summaries give you conclusions without the reasoning. They strip out the examples, the nuance, the counterarguments, and the narrative that makes ideas stick. You get the "what" but not the "why" or the "how." This matters because understanding isn't the same as knowing the answer. Understanding means you can apply the idea in new contexts, critique it, and build on it. A summary gives you none of that.

There's also the illusion of knowledge problem. Reading a summary can make you feel like you understand something when you actually just recognise the key terms. This false confidence is arguably worse than knowing nothing, because it closes off the curiosity that leads to real learning.

So what actually makes you smarter?

The honest answer is that it depends on what "smarter" means to you. If it means having broad awareness of many topics, podcasts and summaries are efficient. If it means deep understanding of specific subjects, books are irreplaceable.

The best approach is probably a combination:

  • Use AI summaries as a filter. Summarise ten books in an hour, then read the two that seem most relevant to your life.
  • Use podcasts for discovery and reinforcement. Listen to an author interview before or after reading their book. Use podcasts to explore fields you're curious about but not yet committed to.
  • Use books for the ideas that matter most to you. When a topic is central to your work, your relationships, or your worldview, give it the time and attention that only a book provides.

The format matters less than the engagement

The most important variable isn't the format. It's what you do with the information afterward. Do you take notes? Do you discuss it with someone? Do you apply it? Research on the "testing effect" shows that actively recalling information, through writing, discussion, or application, dramatically improves retention regardless of the original format.

A book you read passively is worth less than a podcast you actively engage with. An AI summary you act on is worth more than a book that sits unfinished on your nightstand. The format is just the delivery mechanism. The learning happens in what you do next.
